    Bellmore, New York, is a Nassau County hamlet that is home to 16,000 residents. Bellmore is nicely situated along the southern shore of Long Island. A 45-minute train ride transports residents into the heart of Manhattan.

    History

    In the mid-1600s, the area was settled by English settlers from Connecticut that crossed Long Island Sound. In 1676, John Smith deeded 100 acres to his son Jeremiah. As the community evolved, it became known as Smithville. The name of the community changed in 1867 when the railroad arrived. Rail officials named the train depot here "Bellmore" for unknown reasons. By the 1920s, the population of what became known as Bellmore had swelled to 3,000.

    Parks and Recreation

    One of the recreational crown jewels of Nassau County is Jones Beach State Park. Visitors can enjoy 6.5 miles of continuous white sand beach that is the longest public beach in the world. The numerous amenities at Jones Beach State Park also include beach volleyball, shuffleboard, miniature golf and paddle tennis. There's also a roller skating rink and two outdoor swimming pools.

    Bethpage State Park is a favorite of certain residents, especially golfers. Bethpage Black is one of five true championship layouts in the park. It has hosted the U.S. Open Championship in 2002 and 2009.

    Attractions and Activities

    The South Shore Art Center in Bellmore offers exhibits that promote local artists as well as traveling exhibits that feature the work of nationally known personalities. The center also offers seminars and educational programs for children and adults alike.

    Events

    One of the most anticipated events every year along the south shore of Long Island is the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach. Some of the best acrobatic teams have performed here, including the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. The Fourth of July fireworks at Jones Beach are viewed from shore and from a large phalanx of pleasure boats that gather for the extravaganza every year.

    At any one time, there are more than a hundred homes for sale in Bellmore. Many of these Bellmore NY homes were built in the 1950s and 1960s.
