Massapequa Park Real Estate

Massapequa Park, NY Real Estate, Massapequa Park Area and Community Information

Massapequa Park, New York, is a hamlet along the southern shore of Long Island with a population of about 17,000. Residents are less than 20 miles from the New York City borough of Queens, and they are only a 45-minute train ride to Manhattan.

    History

The earliest settlers of European descent were largely German immigrants who relocated from Brooklyn in the early 1800s. They called their new community "Wurtenberg." In 1868, the Woodcastle Hotel was constructed to serve New Yorkers and others that wanted to enjoy the shoreline in the summertime.

In 1928, three Irish-Americans promoted the sale of lots in their development. An area between Merrick Road and the Sunrise Highway still features streets with Irish names. In the 1920s, Massapequa Park had its own airfield for private planes. It was reported that about 100,000 people attended the dedication ceremonies of the Fitzmaurice Flying Field.

    Parks and Recreation

Cyclists can pursue fitness on the Massapequa Preserve Bike Path. The path runs from Bethpage State Park down to Massapequa. Portions of the bike path are routed parallel to the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail, providing riders with a tranquil escape from daily urban life.

    Attractions and Activities

The 423-acre Massapequa Preserve is divided into three areas by major roads in the area. The southern section in Massapequa Park offers the most ecologically diverse lands.

Rare and endangered species like carnivorous sundews, orchids and bladder worts are found here. The habitat includes sandy bogs, freshwater swamps, marshes, streams and lakes. In 2006, the facility was named "The Best Nature Preserve on Long Island" by Long Island Press.

    Events

Many Massapequa Park residents head out to Jones Beach State Park each Memorial Day weekend for the Bethpage Air Show. Stunt planes and jet fighters engage in memorable aerial stunts and formations. The show has hosted performances by the Blue Angels and the Air Force Thunderbirds in the past. The park also puts on quite a fireworks show to commemorate the birth of our nation. The Fourth of July fireworks are even more dramatic as they reflect in the waters down below.
